Virtual 2: Charlotte Trossbach - focus on the studio

"Focus on the studio" - the artist Charlotte Trossbach meant it seriously when she chose this title for her virtual exhibition - or should we say "literally"? An artist's studio is his or her realm of creation. It is the place where the artwork is made that is possibly destined to be shown in an exhibition. At exhibitions the focus is on the finished pieces of art - and not on the space in which they were produced.

Some artists have huge warehouse spaces where they work, others rent a room in a studio community. The latter offers the advantage that the artist is not so alone - there is always a colleague or two around for conversation, for talking about the latest works or just to drink a cup of coffee with. Back in the studio the artist is once again alone ... with a blank canvas.

Just like writers have rituals or develop strategies to start writing, artists too develop their own "ignition system". But even though an artist may know what he or she wants to paint, that doesn't mean that the phase of critical self-questioning is over. Instead new quesitons arise: Is the painting going in the right direction? Can this or that (still) be painted? When should the artist stop painting? When is a painting finished?

This virtual exhibition directs the focus towards the space around Charlotte Trossbach when she is working as well as towards the time space before a painting leaves her studio to be shown in an exhibition. Trivial tasks such as washing out her brushes can be seen, as well as the moments in which her view wanders to the reflections on the ceiling or floor from the disco balls (yes, they are still around).

Focus on the studio: This virtual exhibition concentrates on the act of painting's "scene of the crime".
