Virtual 7: Katharina Gierlach - Across the Pond

Most of the other artists at VCCA were writers. It was very interesting to see and experience the similiarities and differences in our work processes. In the evenings there were often readings. In this context it felt only natural to paint books.
The different layers of paint give the color fields a velvety texture. An iridescent, shimmering color effect is created through high-contrast, pointilistic areas. That is something that I am very interested in when painting - such as when I paint grass meadows or stadium stands full of spectators.

Virtual 7: Katharina Gierlach - Across the Pond

Travelling is in general considered to be a source of inspiration. A different environment, a foreign language and new acquaintances sharpen the senses und open one's mind. In the autumn of 2016 the painter Katharina Gierlach (formerly Dietlinger) spent several weeks in New York and Virginia. Through a stipend from the Oberpfälzer Künstlerhaus she spent six weeks at the Virgina Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA).

In Virginia she met artist colleagues from other disciplines. This exchange, combined with a break from daily routine, as well as the opportunity to experiment are what makes centers such as VCCA so unique. The virtual exhibition shown here is a result of her stay abroad. It is a combination of photographs that Katharina Gierlach made while travelling and of paintings she made at her studio at VCCA. She explains why she took certain snapshots, what she sees in them and what she watches out for.
