As an art student at the Royal Collage of Art in London, Gordon Cheung began reading about business cycles and economic market crisis cycles. With the housing bubble and financial crisis of 2008, Cheung's interest in the formation of bubbles grew, leading him to the first well-documented speculative bubble in economic history - namely, speculation on tulip bulbs in the Netherlands in the 17th century.

"Tulipmania" is the name of his series alluding to this speculative bubble. Here, too, the stock market section of the "Financial Times" is his painting background. The models for his tulips come from the sales catalogs of Dutch tulip dealers at the time - the beauty of the flowers should attract buyers. The rare, multi-colored "mottled" tulips, that is, tulips that are not uniformly colored, were especially sought after at the time. Cheung increased the desirability of his tulips by adding iridescent, hallucinogenic colors to them - they approach the viewer and try to seduce him.
Gordon Cheung lives and works in London, where he also grew up. His works are in renowned collections and museums, such as the British Museum or the Museum of Modern Art (Moma) in New York.
