Mel Ramos dies at age 83
Pop Art legend Mel Ramos was born in 1935 in Sacramento, California. He became an important figure in the first generation of American Pop artists, who predominantly came from the East Coast, such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. In 1963 his work was included in the exhibition "Pop goes the Easel" in the Contemporary Art Museum in Houston, TX. In 1965 the group show "Neue Realisten und Pop Art" took place at the Akademie der Künste in then West-Berlin. 1966-67 the group show "11 Pop Artists" toured the US as well as coming to Hamburg, Berlin and Munich. The new art movement Pop made an impact and was here to stay.
Mel Ramos painting style was influenced by his teacher Wayne Thiebaud, the imagery in his art was influenced by comics and advertising. His wife Leta, who he married in 1955, was his muse and stood model for his paintings and drawings many times. Since the 1970's he has been travelling between California and Spain, where he owned a house in the pictoresque village of Horta de San Juan.
The Albertina in Vienna showed in 2011 a major show of his work; 2012 he was honored by his hometown Sacramento with a retrospective of over 50 years of his work at the Crocker Art Museum.
Mel Ramos passed away at age 83 on October 14, 2018 in Oakland, CA.

Marion Eichmann: Berlin Hyp Award
Marion Eichmann's exhibtion "Lichter" (lights) can be seen August 31st till November 2nd, 2018 in Berlin at Berlin Hyp AG (Budapester Straße 1, 10787 Berlin). The exhibition is taking place on the occassion of her receiving the Berlin Hyp Award last year at Positions Art Fair in Berlin.
"Alchemists of art"
Björn Schneider visited the exhibition openings of Albrecht Wilds's "Formsache" and Petra Scheibe Teplitz' "Torffrei" at DavisKlemmGallery and wrote an article for the Publishing Group Rhein-Main. He quotes art historian Dr. Anett Göthe, who called the artists "alchemists of art": "Both of them are constantly looking for new substances and materials, in order to transform these into a new form." Photo project DavisKlemmGallery
Congratulations to Ana Sasse, who successfully finished her apprenticeship for photography this summer at Gutenbergschule in Frankfurt. The task for her final paper was to photograph an exhibition in a gallery as well as the gallery itself. For this purpose she contacted DavisKlemmGallery and took pictures of our gallery building and of the exhibition by the California artist Bean Finneran.
Window Exhibition in Folkestone: Steve Johnson
A shop window in Folkestone, England, is regularly transformed by artists into an exhibition space (111 x 167 x 50 cm or 0.93 m²) that can only be viewed from the outside. Casement Arts asked our artist Steve Johnson to do an installation, which is on view July 28th till August 10th, 2018. The name of the show is "Full English", the traditional English breakfast. Steve Johnson serves it on broken porcelain - a reference to the fragmentation of post referendum England. More infos here.
"More than ceramics"
Art journalist and publisher Karlheinz Schmid wrote an article about Bean Finneran's sculptures in the July edition of the KUNSTZEITUNG: "These are sculptures that could hardly be more beautiful, because they appear on the one hand to be delicate, on the other hand they powerfully conquer space based on a minimalist repertoire of forms." Marion Eichmann in Bonn
From July 6th till November 4th, 2018 the Museum August Macke Haus in Bonn is presenting the exhibition "Interface: Cut-outs and Silhouettes in Dialogue". A location-specific variation of Marion Eichmann's installation "Laudromat" is included in this exhibition. More infos here.
Press "Architecture Day"
Art and architecture enthusiasts took advantage of "Archtecture Day" on June 23rd and 24th, 2018 to visit DavisKlemmGallery and the current exhibition "Bean Finneran: sculpture". Link to press article (in German).
Exhibition Bean Finneran in the press
After a successful opening of the exhibition "Bean Finneran: sculpture", here is the link to an article (in German) in the Wiesbadener Kurier.
The exhibition runs till August 4th. On June 23rd and 24th, "Architecture Day", the gallery is open from 10 am till 5 pm. The DavisKlemmGallery belongs to eight buildings in Wiesbaden that have been selected for this year's "Architecture Day".

Steve Johnson at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition
Congratulations to our artist Steve Johnson, whose work has been selected for this year's Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London June 12th till August 19th. The Summer Exhibition has been taking place for 250 consecutive years. Steve Johnson's artwork titled "Bathers" belongs to his group of "grey pieces", displaying interiors of homes, but with the floor missing.

Albrecht Wild in "Pleasure Garden"
The Kunstverein Neuhausen e.V. presents from June 9th till July 22nd, 2018 the theme group exhibition "Pleasure Garden - Jardin des Delices". The show is divided into three sections, "Pleasure Garden-Garden Pleasure", "Museum of Frozen Ecstasy" and "Inverted Paradise", and presents various artistic positions that refer to the idea of a pleasure garden. Ukiyo-e collages by our artist Albrecht Wild will be shown.

Day of Architecture:
The new building of DavisKlemmGallery has been selected as an example of good architecture for this year's "Day of Architecture". In the entire state of Hesse in Germany 91 projects have been chosen for this event, eight of which are in Wiesbaden - including DavisKlemmGallery.
The "Day of Architecture" takes place since 1995. The selected projects in the state of Hesse will open their doors on June 23rd and 24th, 2018. DavisKlemmGallery is open on both days from 10 am till 5 pm - an opportunity to see both the building as well as the minimalist sculptures of Californian artist Bean Finneran.

DavisKlemmGallery and "Short Night" in Wiesbaden
The DavisKlemmGallery took part in the 18th "Short Night of the Galleries and Museums" in Wiesbaden on April 14, 2018. Besides the exhibition "The Farewell State" with works by the English artist Steve Johnson and the studio exhibition with new silkscreen prints by Michael Craig-Martin, three short animated films by the Berlin artist Susanne Rosin were presented. Works by Albrecht Wild be will in a group exhibition at the Universidade Sénior de Almada (USALMA) in Portugal february 9th - 23rd, 2018.

Dorothee Baer-Bogenschütz wrote a critique of the exhibition "No Fighting on Christmas. The air-conditioned nightmare". "A wonderfully concentrated show" with a "selection of works both fascinating and profound." Link to article in German here.
DavisKlemmGallery at Art Karlsruhe 2018
For the tenth year in a row DavisKlemmGallery will exhibit at Art Karlsruhe. For this anniversary the gallery will present for the first time in Germany sculptures by Californian artist Bean Finneran at the sculpture space in hall 2 next to our booth. Her works will also be shown at the gallery in a solo exhibition during the summer of 2018.
Works by Salzburg artist Konrad Winter will be shown in a one-artist-show at our booth. Other artists whose works the gallery will display in Karlsruhe are: Thomas Baumgärtel, Werner Berges, Katharina Gierlach, Julian Opie, Barbara Storck-Brundrett and Albrecht Wild.
